Elle King Biography

Elle King Biography

Elle King was born in 1989 to Rob Schneider and London King, a former model. She was born on July 3 in Los Angeles, California. She grew up living in Ohio with her mother: her parents had a divorce. Her stepfather, Justin Tesa, introduced her to country music, he gave her a record by the all-female hard-rock band the Donnas.

During her teenage years, King lived in New York City, but she has also called Los Angeles, Philadelphia, and Copenhagen, Denmark, her home at different times.

After graduating from Elisabeth Irwin High School/Little Red School House, she moved to Philadelphia to attend the University of the Arts. There, she focused on studying painting and film.

It was during her college years that King had a significant artistic moment. She attended a live show where a band on stage used a banjo in a unique way, not following the traditional bluegrass and country style typically associated with the instrument. This experience sparked an epiphany for King, and she began incorporating the banjo into her own compositions.

After college, she spent some time living in Copenhagen and Los Angeles before eventually returning to her roots in New York. Currently, she resides in the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn.

King’s Music Career

When King was 13, she got into playing the guitar and fell in love with the music of artists like Otis Redding, the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Etta James, Aretha Franklin, Al Green, Hank Williams, Johnny Cash, AC/DC (she even has “dirty deeds” tattooed on her biceps), and Earl Scruggs.

Her fascination with Hank Williams and Earl Scruggs led her to pick up the banjo as well. During her teenage years, she attended Buck’s Rock camp in Connecticut, where she showed off her talent in various musicals.

As she gained more recognition, King appeared on TV and in 2014, she released her single “Ex’s & Oh’s,” which became a hit. It reached the top 10 in the U.S. and earned her two Grammy Award nominations.

Another one of her notable hits is “Drunk (And I Don’t Wanna Go Home)” featuring Miranda Lambert, which came out in 2021. It peaked at No. 37 on the Billboard Top 100 and spent a solid 30 weeks on the chart.
