Sleep Like a Winner: 5 Quick Tips for Choosing the Best Type of Bed

Your bedroom is an oasis, a place for comfort as well as a retreat from stress. The bed you should choose should define your room’s look and feel. The wrong bed can lead to sore muscles, back pains, and lack of sleep.

So, how do you choose the right type of bed? Continue reading for some tips on choosing the right type of bed and choosing the best mattress.

1. Consider the Space of the Room

You need a good look at the space of your bedroom to ensure that the bed can fit. Make a plan not only for your bed but for the furniture and decorations as well. Below are some common bed dimensions with the width by length:

  • Twin/Single: 38″ x 75″
  • Extra-Long Twin: 38″ x 80″
  • Full/Double: 54″ x 75″
  • Queen: 60″ x 80″
  • King: 76″ x 80″
  • California King: 72″ x 84″

Write down the dimension of your bedroom and bring it with you when choosing a bed. When you pick a type of bed, keep in mind the size of the headboard and footboard.

2. Keep Your Medical Issues in Mind

Check your body or see a doctor to address physical issues. Your cushioning and support should help align your spine and relieve ailments.

If you have pain issues, you should get a mattress that matches your condition. We recommend you go for a hybrid mattress and get a medium-firm mattress.

3. Choose the Best Mattress and Pillows

The best mattress you should have is one that adapts to your body’s contours. The wrong mattress can give you harmful health side effects. There are six common types of mattresses:

  • Latex
  • Coil
  • Pillow-top
  • Memory foam
  • Adjustable
  • Hybrid

The latex foam is popular due to its cooling properties and comfort. It has excellent responsiveness and bounciness.

The coil mattress has one or more layers of spring coils made out of steel. A larger number of coils typically means better comfort and support.

Pillow-top mattresses have a layer of any soft material either stuffed or sewn onto the cover. It works as an extra comfort cushion for your sleeping surface.

A memory foam mattress is best for body contouring. It also gives pressure relief and support for back pains. The only downside to memory foam is that it can heat up while you sleep.

Adjustable mattresses allow you to change your sleeping position. It can elevate the feel and incline your back. The mattress also has some unique features like a vibrate, heat up, and massage mode while you sleep.

Hybrid mattresses are a mix of latex, memory, and support foams. If you were to choose the best mattress, the hybrid mattress is excellent for pressure relief and support. It also has cooling, bounce, and responsiveness settings.

Your mattress should also have the right firmness. You can choose from soft, medium, and firm. The firmness all depends on your body type, weight, size, and medical issues.

Picking Your Pillows

Your pillows also help support a healthy sleep posture. The right pillow aligns your body from the knees and hips to your head and neck. If you like a soft pillow, go for down pillows with filling made from either goose or duck fibers.

A synthetic down and polyester fill has a medium to soft feeling. Wool and cotton fillings tend to feel flat and firm. For the size of the pillow, a standard-sized pillow is enough for your sleep posture.

4. Find the Right Bed Design

The type of bed you plan to choose should have the right sized headboard and footboard. Below are some of the bed designs:

Panel

The panel bed is the most basic bed option with a flat panel headboard. It has a bed frame with a matching flat panel footboard. The panel bed usually does not have frills and designs on the boards.

Wingback

A wingback bed has two panels coming out from both sides. The bed has no footboard, but it has a longer headboard.

Sleigh

The sleigh bed has an outward-arching shape for the footboard and headboard. This bed, however, can take up more floor space than other bed designs. These beds come in ornately designed, dark stained wood with modern designs.

Slat

The design of the slat’s headboard and footboard includes vertical or horizontal slats or railings. Wooden slat beds look more clean-cut while metal slat beds have a more vintage and rustic look.

Open-Frame

The headboards and footboards feature free-flowing or organic lines. The open-frame bed is the most versatile design for any style.

Storage Included

The storage-included design is best for small rooms with a lot of stuff. The storage areas are usually wide, deep drawers at the bottom of the beds.

Murphy

The murphy bed design has a foldable wall panel for easy storage. It looks like a wall mount with either a closet, dresser, or bureau.

Four-Poster

This bed design has decorative posts that rise from each corner of the bed frame. The posts can range from only a couple inches above the mattress, to high enough to reach the ceiling.

Canopy

The canopy is similar to the four-poster, but the beams connect at the top, reaching up to the ceiling. The canopy is usually outfitted with curtains to cover around the bed.

5. Make the Bed Match Your Theme

Your bed is the focal point of our bedroom. Look around the room and choose a bed that matches the theme. Make sure it fits with how you plan to use the room.

If you like a clean, modern, and sleep look, you should go for a platform bed. A platform bed only requires a mattress and has no box spring. It looks simple, and it’s easy on your wallet.

If you like a more classic look, add a traditional bed with a mattress and box spring. Get a bed with carvings paired with a piece of plain fabric for a bed covering.
