Advice for Construction Workers: What to Do if You Get Injured at Work

Workplace injuries are very common—especially in the construction industry. If you or one of your colleagues have been injured and you don’t know what to do, this guide has all the tips and information you need.

Life as a construction worker naturally comes with some risks, right? Construction sites aren’t typically the safest places on earth due to the fact that there are heavy pieces of machinery and dangerous tools everywhere. Not to mention, there’s also the element of heights, which pose the risk of falls.

Taking all of this into account, it’s not surprising that thousands of construction workers get injured each year.

This article will firstly take a look at the most common sources of injury for construction workers in 2022, and then give some general advice on how to take legal action.

Pipeline accidents

If you’ve been in the construction industry for a while, you likely know at least one person who has suffered a pipeline-related injury.

Gas and oil pipelines are very dangerous. Sadly, they can explode for a variety of different reasons, such as:

  • Lack of maintenance
  • Leaks
  • Poor installation

If you throw any of these factors into the mix, then an explosion is always a possibility. Even if you’re working several meters away from the explosion, it can still cause you serious harm, which might have happened to you at some point in your career.

Falls

Falls are another common cause of workplace injuries in construction. Usually, the costliest falls are those that take place from big heights. For example, if a construction worker falls from a couple of storeys high, they’re going to experience life-changing injuries.

However, even relatively small falls can still cause long-term injuries, which is a safety point to keep in mind.

Burns

Fires happen quite frequently on construction sites. Fortunately, most of them get handled quickly meaning nobody gets hurt. Sadly, though, there are cases when construction workers have ended up getting burnt, such as when big explosions happen.

Scaffolding collapses

As a construction worker, you’ll have dealt with scaffolding your entire career. When scaffolding is installed and maintained properly, there are never any problems. However, when the right boxes aren’t ticked (and nobody is conducting inspections), then it can lead to a collapse.

Collapses can be fatal in some cases when there are employees standing on the scaffolding or doing work directly below it.

Heat stroke

During heat waves, heat stroke is very common on construction sites. This is usually caused by:

  • Overworking
  • Dehydration
  • Too many layers of clothing
  • Improper ventilation
  • No air conditioning

Often, heat stroke is not dangerous. However, in some cases, it can cause injury, such as when a construction worker suffers from heat stroke, falls, and then bangs their head on the floor.

Due to the nature of heat stroke, many construction workers simply brush it off and carry on as normal. But, if they have been injured as a result of heat stroke (even if it’s just a minor injury), they may be entitled to compensation for it.

Post-injury problems

In the aftermath of a construction site injury, various problems can arise. One of the most common problems is ongoing pain. For example, back pain can often take months—or even years—to go away.

Other problems include medical bills, psychological anguish, and decreased confidence when doing particular work tasks.

If you’ve been injured on-site and are experiencing any of the above-mentioned problems, then make sure to keep reading.

The next step: contact an attorney

Contacting an attorney is the best action you can take if you’ve experienced any form of injury as a construction worker. Upon contacting an attorney, they will consult with you so that they can unpack all the details of your specific incident; from the date and time to the lasting impact of it. When you’re the victim of one of the incidents described above—a pipeline accident, for example, you’re more than likely entitled to receive compensation for it. To start your compensation journey, you should contact a pipeline accident attorney. Alternatively, if someone you know has been in a pipeline accident (or any other type of accident) you can recommend that they contact an attorney as soon as possible so that they can get justice!

From there, a case will be put together and legal action will be taken. More often than not, if you have a strong case, you will receive a payout for what you’ve gone through.

Good luck with your case.
