How to Install Faux Wood Blinds: A Guide for Homeowners

If you want to improve the interior design of a space in your house, faux wood blinds might be the perfect option. They can upgrade an old window treatment and provide the beautiful look of real wood at a fraction of the cost.

But before you rush out to buy faux wood blinds, you have first to learn how to install them. They’re a little different from regular blinds and can be more challenging.

If you’re up for a little DIY home improvement and learning a new skill, installing them is easy, fun, and rewarding.

Keep reading to learn more about how to install faux wood blinds.

Start Measuring

Start by measuring the window from inside the frame, from the top to the bottom of the window. Record this measurement in inches, as it will determine the exact size of blinds necessary.

For an inside mount, measure from the left side of the window to the right side. For an outside mount, measure from the top left point of the window to the bottom right. With customized window blinds, measurement is essential.

Attach the Brackets

Installation of faux wood blinds requires the homeowner to secure the brackets to the window opening. Brackets should be positioned 3-3 ½ inches (7.6-8.9 cm) outside of the window opening to ensure the blind fits properly.

You will need to attach the inside brackets on the side closest to the hinges. With the included screws, insert points into the wall and attach the bracket. Use a level to ensure the bracket is straight.

Attach the Valance Clips

To attach the clips, use a flat-head screwdriver to gently push the valance clip into the headrail of the blind and rotate the clip onto the headrail until it locks into place. Be sure to evenly space the valance clips so that the blind will hang evenly.

Place the faux wood valance onto the clips and gently push it into the clips. The valance should remain secure, and the faux wood blinds will look amazing.

Install the Blinds

When purchasing home blinds, buy ones that are properly sized for the window and fit inside the window frame. If cut-to-size is not available, cut the blinds to the desired size. When ready to begin the installation, attach the mounting brackets to each side of the window frame.

Make sure that the brackets are level and at the same height. Slide the headrail into the mounting brackets and make sure the brackets fit properly. Finally, adjust the slats and cords until the blinds are centered in the window frame and open and close correctly.

Trim the Excess Cord or Wand

With the blinds still in your assistant’s hands, take a sharp pair of scissors and snip the excess cord off. Be sure not to cut too much, as you can always trim more, but you can’t reattach an excessive amount that has been cut off. After trimming off the excess, double-check the blinds to make sure they are still even, and the string is secure.
