The sad fact is you likely know someone who is addicted or will become addicted. 

Knowing this, it’s important to recognize the signs your loved one has an addiction so you can get them help right away. While you cannot guarantee success, catching a substance abuse problem as early as possible increases your chance of long-term recovery.

1. Lying or Evasiveness 

One drug addiction sign is lying and evasiveness. A person struggling with addiction will tell any lie to any person to cover up their addiction. If your loved one is consistently lying about where they are going or what they are doing, they might have a problem.  

2. Unpredictable Mood Swings

One of the many signs of a drug addict is unpredictable mood swings. This is likely from a drastic life change added to being under the influence of a toxic substance. If your loved one has drastic mood swings that make no sense, they may need your help.  

3. Defensiveness

Being defensive is a common sign of drug abuse. Your loved one knows that taking drugs is not only illegal but bad for their health and socially unacceptable. This will cause them to be defensive if you ask any uncomfortable questions. 

4. Physical Changes

Physical changes are one of the signs of an addict. Your loved one might suddenly lose weight, have dilated pupils, track marks, or more. You might also notice, sudden and bad acne, flushed skin, or an overall unhealthy look. 

5. Sudden Financial Problems

One of the common signs of a drug addict is sudden financial problems. Drugs are expensive and will drain even the healthiest of accounts. If your loved one suddenly needs money, is stealing from family members, or selling their items, they may have a problem. 

6. Withdrawal Symptoms

Perhaps the most common sign your loved one has a substance abuse problem is withdrawal symptoms. This includes vomiting, sleep problems, flu-like symptoms, muscle aches and pains, and more. If you notice any of these symptoms, consider an outpatient drug rehab center
