Preparing Wood for Outdoor Use: A Guide

Look around you. Our world is filled with wood. From houses to furniture, outdoor decks to doors, almost everything is made of wood.

But when it comes to outdoor use, even the best quality wood loses its quality. Then what should you do when you want to make a deck, add a home feature, or build storage for your outdoor needs? It’s time to learn about preparing wood for outdoor use.

Clean the Surface of the Wood

If you want your wood to last outdoors, you need to clean the surface of the wood first. You can use a power washer, but make sure you don’t strip the natural oils from the wood.

You can also use a mild detergent and a soft brush. Rinse the detergent off and let the wood dry completely before you apply any sealer or paint.

Lightly Sand the Surface

After cleaning the wood, you should lightly sand the surface. This will help to smooth out any rough areas and also help to remove any dirt or debris that may be on the surface.

Sanding will also help to remove any old paint or varnish that may be on the surface of the wood. Once you have sanded the surface, you should then clean off the wood with a damp cloth.

Apply Varnish

Varnish can help protect the wood from the elements and make it last longer. When choosing a varnish, make sure you pick one that is specifically for outdoor use. When you’re about to apply the varnish, make sure you do it in a well-ventilated area.

Once you have applied the varnish, you should let it dry for at least 24 hours before you use the piece of wood. You can apply multiple coats if the first coat isn’t enough or if you want more protection. At least two coats are usually recommended.

Use Wood Sealers to Seal the Wood

Wood sealers provide a number of benefits, including protecting the wood, like larch cladding, from weathering, reducing the risk of rot and decay, and repelling insects and pests. There are a variety of wood sealers available on the market, so it is important to choose one that is right for the type of wood you are sealing.

Use an Oil Finish to Protect the Wood

This will help to keep the water out, while also providing a layer of protection against the sun and other elements. There are a few things to keep in mind when using an oil finish, however, such as making sure the wood is clean and dry before applying the oil.

You will also want to apply a thin layer of oil, and then allow it to dry completely before adding another layer. This process should be repeated several times to ensure the best protection for your outdoor wood.
